Community Organizing Outreach Leader

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Mission: TNDC develops community and provides affordable housing and services for people with low incomes in the Tenderloin and throughout San Francisco, to promote equitable access to opportunity and resources.

Established in 1981, TNDC has grown to employ nearly 430 staff, to develop, own, manage and provide supportive services in 42 properties that offer deeply affordable housing for nearly 4,800 tenants, and to expand its work in community organizing and afterschool programming. TNDC is viewed as a trusted and well-organized community ally locally and a practice leader nationally. In San Francisco, TNDC envisions diverse communities where people with low incomes can fulfill their potential and meet their basic needs. Community Organizing Outreach Leader

Under the supervision of the Community Organizer, the Community Organizing Outreach Leaders (COOL) will outreach to the community in order to engage them into participating in the community organizing department’s different programs, classes, workshops, campaigns, etc.  COOLs will work together to plan and implement how to best outreach primarily in the Tenderloin community but also in the South of Market neighborhood.  COOLs will receive training on such topics as: Outreach 101 and strategies, Active Listening, Strategies for Community Engagement, Public speaking, Group facilitation, Volunteer Recruitment, and Team Building.  They are responsible for attending weekly planning meetings, weekly outreach activities, and skill-building workshops.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

     ·        Attend hourly weekly meetings

·        Attend a 2 hour long monthly skills training, planning, and/or workshops

·        Attend all assigned outreach task assignments.

·        Work with the Community Organizing Department to plan and implement community outreach activities such as: flyering, tabling, door to door knocking, phone banking, 1 on 1s, presentations, and collecting information to help determine what to focus on for the organizing work.  A large amount of the work will occur within TNDC buildings.

·        Develop and maintain relationships with staff and other Tenderloin community members, store owners, merchants, city officials, and organizations

·        Work in teams to implement outreach activities and projects

·        Lead Outreach Teams for major projects/events when needed.

REQUIRED SKILLS

      ·        Strong commitment to Social Justice in the Tenderloin

·        Comfortable engaging, speaking, and working with people of different backgrounds

·        Ability to work with diverse communities in the Tenderloin

·        Ability to work professionally & respectfully with residents and staff

·        Ability to be on time and consistent in attending scheduled meetings and events

·        Demonstrated leadership, organizational and communication skills

·        Ability to work independently and as a team

·        Ability to speak publically and engage residents in meaningful conversations

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·        Resident of the Tenderloin neighborhood and must be at least 18 years of age

 

PREFERRED SKILLS

 ·        Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Arabic, or Tagalog strongly preferred

·        Familiar with all or most of the programs/workshops/classes/efforts offered by TNDC’s Community Organizing Department

·        Must be able to lift 15 pounds

·        Experience with grassroots organizing
