Community Engagement and Leadership Specialist

Established in 1981, TNDC has grown to employ more than 430 staff, to develop, own, manage and provide supportive services in 42 properties that offer deeply affordable housing for nearly 4,700 tenants, and to expand its work in community organizing and afterschool programming. TNDC is viewed as a trusted and well-organized community ally locally and a practice leader nationally. SUMMARY

 

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Community Organizing Manager, the Community Engagement and Leadership Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating strategies to carry out the TNDC Community Organizing Department’s mission and vision through popular education and grassroots leadership development. Duties include leading, designing, and evaluating the Community Organizing Department’s leadership development programming and conducting ongoing engagement efforts for alumni of the leadership development program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES                    

 

  • The Community Engagement and Leadership Specialist customarily and regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment in the following job duties:
  • Design, organize, and deliver Leadership Academy curriculum for low-income Tenderloin residents that is respectful, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive.Conduct ongoing assessment and evaluation of Leadership Academy programming to identify program outcomes and impacts as well as the strategic needs of grassroots organizers.
  • Support and coordinate grassroots community members and Community Organizing Department staff in facilitating workshops, academy classes, and trainings.
  • Identify the leadership development needs of grassroots community members.
  • Identify, recruit, and train grassroots community members to participate in Leadership Academy programs.
  • Integrate Leadership Academy participants into the campaign and base-building work of the Community Organizing department.
  • Manage the Community Organizing Department’s participation in the NeighborWorks Community Leadership Institute, including recruiting grassroots community members to participate, overseeing development and completion of action platform, and managing reporting requirements for the project.
  • Maintain Community Organizing Department’s database of Leadership Academy students and alumni.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Community Organizing Manager.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

 

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles
  • Knowledge of popular education and community organizing tools and approaches
  • Knowledge of issues of race and class and how those are embedded in the development of grassroots leadership
  • Familiarity with San Francisco politics and community organizing
  • Experience and comfort with technology including database management
  • Excellent community building skills, public speaking skills
  • Ability to facilitate meetings.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Ability to understand and communicate the needs of low-income residents.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team structure.
  • Able to attend evening meetings and work on weekends

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  •  Four-year college degree, or equivalent experience.
  •  Two years of experience with leadership development, curriculum development, and/or adult education.
  •  Two years of organizing or community development experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  •  Bilingual and Bi-literate in English and at least one of the following languages:  Mandarin/Cantonese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Tagalog.
  •  Familiarity with the Tenderloin neighborhood.
